Position Overview:

We’re looking for experienced and dynamic coordinators to lead our team this summer in Youth Drop-in.  As part of our City of Kitchener Youth Services team, you will help create a variety of activities for youth ages 12-17 at our local community centres to meaningfully engage local youth each week. You will be responsible for supporting multiple staff teams as they provide active recreation, social and leadership opportunities for youth in a fun and relaxed environment across the city.

  • Experience providing guidance, mentorship, and support to staff 
  • Experience developing, implementing, and reviewing program plans for age-appropriate youth activities
  • Understand the value of relationship-building in working with youth and have a caring, positive, and patient approach
  • Are organized and can coordinate multiple sites across the city
  • Understand conflict resolution processes and group dynamics
  • A motivator, have strong relationship building and effective communication skills
  • Passionate about working with youth ages 12-17 and providing meaningful opportunities for recreation, leisure and social activities.

 

Employment dates: May 20-August 27, 2025

Hours of work: May 20-June 6 daytime hours (e.g. 9:00am-5:00pm, 8:30am-4:30 pm)

                           June 9 - August 27 2:00pm-10:00 pm (Tuesdays 3:00pm-11:00pm)

  • No work scheduled on June 30 and on statutory holidays (July 1 and August 4)
  • Please Note: ALL training in-person and online is required and mandatory to complete prior to start of program/camp. 

 

Selection is based on a combination of application and interview.  

 

Responsibilities:

 

Staff Coordination

  • Assist the Youth Services Coordinator in the design, development and delivery of staff training.
  • Plan and facilitate weekly coordination team meetings and collaborate and communicate effectively with all team members.
  • Implement team-building strategies, staff appreciation and incentive programs and actively participate in creating a high-energy team.
  • Visit program sites and meet teams on location weekly.
  • Monitor program activities and provide support, coordination and feedback to staff and address minor performance issues to ensure the delivery of safe, quality, and inclusive programs.
  • Assist staff in addressing youth behaviour issues and implementing effective behaviour management strategies as needed.   
  • Provide written feedback to assigned staff through mid-term and final evaluations.  

 

Program Coordination and Administration

  • Prepare program materials (e.g. staff manuals, staff contact list, program binders, etc.).
  • Role-model good character and positive behaviour for staff team and youth participants (including teamwork, listening, responsibility, initiative, problem-solving, positive youth development and sportsmanship).
  • Help implement and support programs by actively participating in youth programs with staff and role-modelling leadership and behaviour management skills.
  • Interact with staff, participants, centre staff and community members/agencies to provide program information and deal with facility or program issues as required.
  • Take action to deal with escalated participant incidents, problems, emergencies and behaviour concerns to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Plan and coordinate the mid-summer and end of summer city-wide events and assist with site specific program outings or special guests.
  • Coordinate the collection and maintenance of timecards, participant forms, evaluations and statistics as well as write and submit reports including a final report prior to the end of the contract.
  • Purchase and distribute program supplies and ensure sites have equipment, supplies and program forms as required.
  • Assist with on-site emergency procedures and provide first aid as required. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma 
  • Minimum 3 months of related experience
  • Minimum age requirement – must be at least 18 years of age or older by the first day of employment, unless otherwise specified
  • Valid CPR Level "C" and Standard First Aid Certificate 
  • Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check or Criminal Record Check at your own expense as a condition of employment issued after March 1, 2025.
  • Employment is conditional upon attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term
  • Access to reliable personal transportation to work is required for the full duration of employment
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
